They may not leap tall buildings, bend steel with their bare hands or even wear capes, but we believe that carers are heroes.

Chances are that many of us will be carers at some point in our lives, or will receive care and support services. For many unpaid carers in Australia, the experience of caring for a loved one can be rewarding, challenging and life-changing.

There’s no doubt that carers make a huge difference to the lives of those they care for. Knowing how much they are appreciated, enriching someone’s life and cementing special bonds with their loved ones can be very fulfilling.

However, it can also bring stress, fatigue, financial strain and reduce opportunities for social and community connection. Carers frequently put themselves second to focus on providing quality care to their loved one.

At Whiddon, we recognise that carers need support too. We offer help at home and have nearly 70 years of experience in supporting people with care needs. Whiddon also offers respite services, which can provide a much-needed break for carers. Whether it’s for a few days, a few weeks, or longer, you can rest assured knowing that we’re there every step of the way.

Heroes are known for making a difference, often without being in the spotlight or seeking recognition. This is what makes carers, in our eyes, heroes.

Carers Week, 16-22 October

We believe that heroes should be celebrated, honoured and appreciated. Carers Week is an ideal time to raise awareness of the incredible work they do. It’s a time to reflect on the valuable and diverse role of carers, their contributions to our communities and economy, and the countless and tireless hours they dedicate.

Carers Week  is a great initiative to encourage Australians to show their appreciation and promote a better understanding of the role of carers.

Where can I find resources and support?

If you’re a carer, there are some great resources and information at your fingertips to support you on your journey, including:

  •  Ways to look after your health and well-being
  •  Tips for exercise and back care
  •  Information on accessing support and assistance
  •  Carer support groups
  • Information on coping and making decisions around choosing a residential placement for your loved  one
  • Information for Young Carers
  • Practical tips for managing daily caring tasks

A great website is www.carersnsw.org.au, which  has a range of factsheets, advice and information for carers on accessing services and support

How can I say thank you and  support a carer?

If you’re wondering how you can thank a carer, there’s plenty of ways you can do this, and make a difference:

  •  Encourage a carer to take a break
  •  Support their health and wellbeing
  •  Help them access resources and assistance
  •  Simply just be there to reach out and listen.

We love that during Carers Week, heroes can be recognised on the Carers Australia website. They have a ‘thank you wall’ where you can join other Australians to say a huge THANKS.
