Whiddon Kelso, an aged care community in the Bathurst area, with the support of the Bedwell Foundation, will create an exciting new community garden for residents, families, visitors and the local community to enjoy.

The $50K project will see plantings of aromatic herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, native plants and colourful blooms, along with the installation of outdoor seating, new pathways and a shade sail.

Gardening Australia’s Costa Georgiadis recently visited Whiddon Kelso and gave the garden plans the tick of approval.

Whiddon CEO, Mr Chris Mamarelis said that Whiddon is delighted to bring this project to life and to further strengthen links between the aged care home and the community.

‘We’re really excited about this project. Outdoor spaces can bring many important wellbeing and health benefits such as reduced anxiety and depression, increased social connection and opportunities for physical exercise. The community garden will be a treasured place where generations can come together, learn new skills and share experiences. The garden is also a way that we can invest in and add value to our community, and as a not for profit organisation, this is of great importance to us,’ he said.

Whiddon Kelso Director Care Services Nicole Mahara welcomed the plans for the garden and said it will bring real benefits to residents and the community.

‘Our residents, staff, family and the community will be able to help nurture the garden and watch it grow. From planting days, celebrations and learning opportunities, the garden will help foster a more connected community.’

‘The garden will bring opportunities to share stories, knowledge and skills of gardening, food and cooking. It will also be a great space for people to enjoy physical activity, relaxation and spending time with loved ones.’

‘It will be a chicken-friendly place, incorporating our creative ageing program, HenPower. This program sees residents nurturing hens and participating in social creative activities based around hen keeping, as well as interacting with volunteers and the community. The new garden will further enhance this award-winning program at Kelso.’ she said.

Whiddon thanks the Bedwell family for their generous contribution towards this project. The Bedwell family has supported the Whiddon Group for many years. One of the wings in the new building at Whiddon Kelso is named in the family’s honour.

Whiddon Kelso is an aged care community located in the Bathurst area offering residential aged care, community care and an independent living village.
