Whiddon Laurieton has unveiled artwork adorning the ‘Queen Thelma’ bus that pays tribute to former resident Thelma Chandler who generously donated funds to purchase the bus for the aged care home.

Thelma’s incredible gift is making a difference to the lives of residents at Whiddon Laurieton. Named in honour of the inspirational former resident who had an incredible zest for life, the bus is enjoyed for special outings, shopping trips and picnics.

Touching the lives of all who knew her, Thelma was fondly known for her loving and generous nature. Those she met were drawn to her smile, sense of humour and charismatic personality.

Thelma loved to have fun which was apparent when she first walked through the doors of Whiddon Laurieton, pointing to the dining room whilst asking “Is that where the discos are held?”

It was fitting that for her 106th birthday, held just a few months before she passed away, Whiddon staff organised a disco themed party with all the trimmings including a mirror ball, dancing, costumes and a DJ.

Thelma inspired others around her and believed in living each day as it comes, leaving the bad behind and surrounding yourself with people who lift you up.

At her disco party, Thelma said “I might be a year older but I think that age is all in the mind. And I do think that with age you get a little bit of extra wisdom.” It was inspiring words like these that made an impact on the lives of those who knew her.

Whiddon Laurieton Director Care Services, George Fotoulis said “We felt very honoured and privileged to care for Thelma. It was amazing to be able to help her celebrate the milestone of her 106th birthday and to see how much she enjoyed the day with her family, friends and Whiddon staff.”

“We are very appreciative and touched by Thelma’s gift. The ‘Queen Thelma’ bus leaves a legacy of her generosity and good will.” George said.
