VintageBites is Whiddon’s new creative ageing program that aims to create a sense of community and combat social isolation and loneliness for older people.

The program will provide opportunities for them to participate in community activities such as cooking, learning food crafts, nutrition education, supermarket tours and more.

VintageBites encompasses cooking, food traditions, nutrition and socialisation and is currently being trialled at two of our Community Care locations, Kyogle and Glenfield.

Food brings together family and friends, culture, traditions and celebrations, and affects our health and quality of life. For many older people who are experiencing frailty or poor health, food can bring great comfort, as well as improving health and wellbeing through appropriate nutrition.

Earlier in 2015, Whiddon conducted research into the causes and impacts of loneliness and social isolation for older Australians and the results revealed that there are over 1.4 million older people experiencing loneliness and many crave more social contact with their community. Our research also revealed that older Australians who experience loneliness are more likely to encounter barriers to remaining socially connected, including financial, access and health barriers.
