{"id":273,"date":"2017-02-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.whiddon.com.au\/yourlife\/lgbtqi-inclusive-aged-care\/"},"modified":"2022-06-17T02:28:53","modified_gmt":"2022-06-17T02:28:53","slug":"lgbtqi-inclusive-aged-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.whiddon.com.au\/yourlife\/lgbtqi-inclusive-aged-care\/","title":{"rendered":"How to look for LGBTQI inclusive aged care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Choosing an aged care facility can be difficult whether you do, or do not, feel comfortable disclosing your LGBTQI status.<\/p>\n<p>The National LGBTQI Health Alliance has created a program called <a href=\"http:\/\/lgbtihealth.org.au\/introducing-silver-rainbow\/\">Silver Rainbow <\/a>that educates and informs on inclusive practices throughout the Australian aged care community.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The most important factor in choosing an aged care home is that it feels like an inclusive and safe place for you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Below is a snapshot of what to look for to support you with choosing the care services that are right for you. You can find the full checklist by the National LGBTQI Alliance at the link below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li>Does the service have a Rainbow Tick? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prideindiversity.com.au\/rainbow-tick-readiness\/\">Rainbow Tick standards<\/a> apply to any organisation in any industry that provide inclusive environments and committed support for the LGBTQI community.<\/li>\n<li>Do the service website or brochures mention LGBTQI?<\/li>\n<li>Do the information forms include more than two options (such as male\/female, or married\/single) and allow space to identify yourself?<\/li>\n<li>Does the service know about the National LGBTI\u00a0Ageing and Aged Care Strategy?<\/li>\n<li>Does the service have a dedicated policy outlining LGBTQI inclusion?<\/li>\n<li>Has the service had any staff trained by\u00a0ACON through the Silver Rainbow Project?<\/li>\n<li>Does the service celebrate or commemorate LGBTQI events such as Mardi Gras or World Aids Day?<\/li>\n<li>Are there visual clues around the service facilities that reflect LGBTQI inclusion?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The most important factor in choosing an aged care service is\u00a0that the service or home feels like an open and safe place for you, and that it feels right for you.
