How To Navigate The NDIS & Disability Support

Navigating the world of disability support services can sometimes feel overwhelming, but with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in place, millions of individuals with disabilities in Australia now have access to more comprehensive and tailored support than ever before.

Whether you or your loved one are living with a disability, Whiddon is committed to supporting anyone who needs that extra bit of help.

We’ve put together this guide to help you navigate the intricacies of the government’s NDIS services and find what you need to help you achieve your goals.

What Is The NDIS?

If you’re just getting started with disability services, the NDIS is perhaps one of the first things that you’ll hear about. The National Disability Insurance Scheme is an Australian government initiative introduced in 2013 that provides support to individuals with disabilities, their families, and carers.

The goal is to ensure that these people have a greater choice and control over the help they receive and ultimately, a stronger sense of independence. The scheme is available to anyone aged between 9 and 65 and is overseen by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) who determines eligibility for anyone seeking these services.

How To Get Started

While getting started with the NDIS can seem daunting at first, it is a fairly straightforward process.

The first step is checking your eligibility by visiting the NDIS website or contacting the NDIA. If you are eligible, you’ll then be directed to complete an access request form and provide supporting evidence of your disability.

Once the NDIA has reviewed and confirmed your application, a representative from their team will invite you to a planning meeting as soon as possible.

Tailoring Disability Support Plans

A core component of the NDIS is its focus on individualised support plans. The planning meeting with your NDIA representative provides the opportunity to discuss your specific needs, goals, and preferences.

With this information, you’ll be able to work with them to develop a tailored plan that meets your unique aspirations. This may include funding for daily living aids, assistance with daily activities, or access to community activities and social groups.

We recommend regularly reviewing and updating your NDIS plan to ensure that it reflects your changing circumstances and needs.

Where To Find Further Support

As a registered NDIS provider, Whiddon offers a range of disability services designed to empower individuals with disabilities to continue living safely and independently at home, while also remaining connected to the things that matter most to them. These supports include:

  • Assistance with daily life
  • Assistance with social & community participation
  • Support Coordination

Our dedicated team can provide guidance and assistance with navigating the NDIS, developing your support plan, and accessing the services you need to achieve your goals.

Depending on your plan, you may also be able to access our support coordination service. This includes extra assistance such as preparation for NDIS meetings, liaising with the NDIA when required and ensuring that your budget is not exceeded.

When navigating the NDIS and disability services, this is a journey that you don’t have to undertake alone. Get in touch with our friendly team today for further information to get started today!
