Why Volunteering In Aged Care Is More Important Than Ever

In an industry that is rapidly undergoing changes, the significance of volunteering for aged care has never been more pronounced. As Australia’s ageing population continues to grow, the need for dedicated, compassionate volunteers is more important than ever. At Whiddon, we know firsthand how volunteers transform the lives of our residents and clients, bringing joy, companionship, and a sense of community.

Apply To Be A Volunteer

The Growing Need For Volunteers

Australia’s population is ageing at an unprecedented rate. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the proportion of older Australians is projected to make up between 21% and 23% of the total population by 2066. As this demographic grows, it necessitates an increase in aged care services, and volunteers are essential in meeting this demand. Their contributions complement the efforts of professional care workers, ensuring that residents and clients receive the attention and support they deserve.

Enriching Lives Through Personal Connections

Whiddon believes in the power of meaningful connections. Our volunteers play a pivotal role in our relationship-based care programs, which focus on building strong, personal bonds with residents and clients. These interactions are not only beneficial for older adults but also deeply rewarding for the volunteers.

Programs like HenPower, where volunteers help residents care for chickens, exemplify this. Such initiatives improve mental health, reduce loneliness, and provide a sense of purpose and joy to both participants and volunteers.

Combating Social Isolation

Social isolation is a common concern for many older adults, particularly those in residential aged care. Research indicates that loneliness can have a major impact on physical and mental health. Volunteers can make a big difference in the overall well-being of older adults, by engaging them in activities, conversations, and outings.

Our volunteers support various social support programs designed to keep residents and clients connected and engaged with the community. From creative ageing initiatives like art and music therapy to simple activities such as shared meals and storytelling sessions, these interactions foster a sense of belonging and happiness.

Providing Essential Support

Volunteers are valued members of the Whiddon family and aged care community as a whole. They assist with a range of activities, from helping with meals and mobility to organising recreational activities such as gardening, arts and crafts and reading.

Moreover, volunteers bring diverse skills and experiences to our community. Whether it’s sharing a hobby, offering technical assistance, or simply lending a listening ear, their contributions are irreplaceable. This diversity enriches the lives of our residents and adds a dynamic element to the aged care environment.

Join Us In Making A Difference

At Whiddon, we are committed to enriching the lives of our residents and clients through compassionate, relationship-based care. Our volunteers are an integral part of this mission, and we are always looking for more dedicated individuals to join our team. Whether you have a few hours to spare each week or can commit to a regular schedule, your contribution can make a significant difference.
