The Impact of Aged Care Workers: Celebrating Everyday Excellence

Every day across Australia, aged care employees show up with compassion, resilience and a genuine commitment to making life better for older people. At Whiddon, we know that aged care is about more than just services. It is about connection, community and the relationships that enrich daily life.

This Aged Care Employee Day (ACE Day), we shone a spotlight on the dedicated individuals and joyful moments that define what it means to work in aged care. From heartfelt care to spontaneous smiles, it is the people who make the biggest difference.

Why Working in Aged Care is So Meaningful

Behind every role in aged care is a deep sense of purpose. Whether you’re preparing meals, providing personal care, supporting wellbeing and leading activities or simply sharing a conversation, aged care careers are built on real, human moments.

For many employees, it is the relationships they build that stay with them most. Seeing residents light up when they are greeted in the morning, hearing stories from decades past, or helping someone feel confident and independent again. These are the moments that turn aged care jobs into lifelong vocations.

Behind Every Role, There’s a Story

To celebrate ACE Day 2025, Whiddon launched a special campaign called “Best Friends at Work”, highlighting the powerful role pets play alongside our people in delivering care and connection.

At the heart of the campaign is Lloyd, a travelling relief chef, and his miniature schnauzer Roy, one of Whiddon’s unofficial Chief Happiness Officers (CHO). Together they have brought warmth, laughter and joy to aged care homes across rural New South Wales. Roy doesn’t just accompany Lloyd. He’s a calming presence and bridge between our care workers and residents.

Their story is just one of many. There is George the Keeshond, who began his volunteer role at just eight weeks old. Wendy the tortoiseshell cat, who made herself at home at Whiddon Temora. And Angus, a Labrador who found his purpose after an early career change from seeing-eye dog to resident companion.

These animals are part of our Creature Comforts program, which brings pets into our residential care homes to support mental wellbeing, encourage movement and connection, and bring a little everyday magic into aged care.

Celebrating Our Team at Whiddon

We believe that joy belongs in aged care. That is why we take every opportunity to celebrate the people behind the care including the nurses, care workers, hospitality teams, allied health professionals, support teams and volunteers who make every day brighter for our residents and clients.

Programs like Creature Comforts are just one example of how we create a workplace where aged care employees feel seen, supported and inspired. We know that when our team feels valued, that care and positivity flow naturally to those we support.
