New Research Project Helps People with Advanced Dementia Engage

Whiddon’s Grafton and Easton Park residential aged care homes have been participating in an exciting new research project with University of Technology Sydney (UTS) called Making it Together.

The project aims to help people with advanced dementia engage by creating personalised sensory objects that are relevant and meaningful to them.

“Many people with advanced dementia find it difficult to engaged with others and can become withdrawn. The program aims to create a familiarity and provide some comfort, stimulation, enjoyment and pleasure through touch and sensory engagement,” said Karn Nelson, Whiddon’s Executive Manager Strategy & Research.

The UTS research team, with support from Whiddon staff and residents’ families and carers, have developed items that have meaning to each resident – from an interactive cog for an ex-engineer, to magnetic flower boards, and a keyboard with keys made of spoons that played tunes when touched.
