Older person home care services out in community

What is the Commonwealth Home Support Program?

The Commonwealth Home Support Program, often called CHSP for short, is a funded aged care program that supports people over the age of 65 years (or 50 years if you identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person) who are living in their own homes.

CHSP services are designed to provide light support and is suited to people who can mostly manage on their own and may need assistance with some tasks or short-term help.

The services available through CHSP are varied, and an organisation may be able to provide a wide-range, or just one or two types of services – what they can provide depends on what they have funding to offer. CHSP is different to a Home Care Package because of how it works – rather than a budget that you can spend on the services that you choose, CHSP provides specific services, such as Domestic Assistance or Transport. This also means that you can have your CHSP services delivered by more than one organisation.

Domestic Assistance and Housework

A clean, tidy home can make living independently much easier! It was also have a positive impact on your health, wellbeing and safety.

Domestic Assistance through the Commonwealth Home Support Program provides extra support with housework. This includes general housework and cleaning, and more specific tasks like helping with the washing or ensuring your kitchen is stocked with nutritious food.

Our dedicated, qualified and experienced care workers are there to work with you to ensure your home is cared for just the way you like it. They also understand the importance of strong and mutually trusting relationships and really enjoy getting to know you, what’s important to you and how to support you at home.

Social Support and Social Groups

Whiddon offers social support, and social groups for seniors, through the Commonwealth Home Support Program. This support is available in the New England region only, through our Narrabri and Tamworth Community Care locations.

We know that helping older people stay connected, enabling them to participate in the things they enjoy and being part of their community is incredibly important to wellbeing. Whiddon’s social groups and social support offer: cooking classes, activity groups, exercise groups, technology lessons and outings to town.

Social support is available one-on-one, in small groups, or in a larger group of people. You’re able to connect with old friends, or make new ones, with the support of a qualified and experienced care worker. Morning tea and lunch may also be provided for group sessions.

Getting started

The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP for short) is a government funded program that supports older people who are living at home. It’s suitable for people who live independently, but need light assistance, and is often considered to be the step before a Home Care Package.

Whiddon offers two types of services through the Commonwealth Home Support Program – Domestic Assistance and Social Support (group or individual). These services are heavily subsidised, so your cost is much lower.

To access CHSP services you will need to be assessed – please let us know if you need help arranging this. If you have been assessed for CHSP and live in the Narrabri, Tamworth or surrounding areas, please talk to us about accessing services with Whiddon today.
